Unit 12 was mainly about the two important productive skills, which are: Speaking and writing. There are a few main reasons why we communicate like, the purpose, to say something, to listen to something and when you are interested in what is being said. In the classroom it is the teachers responsibility to create the need and desire to communicate, using different activities. There are two types of activities: accuracy activities, which are more for the study phase where the students are controlled to producing correct language. Fluency activities, used during the activate stage, here we allow the students to experiment and create with less accuracy controlling and where we care more about the effectiveness. Both these forms of activities are equally important. When speaking in the classroom, there are controlled activities (accuracy based), controlled by the teacher. Activities like, drilling and prompting. Then there is also guided activities: also accuracy based but more creative and productive, for example, free role-play and information gaps. I need to encourage the students to speak, as there might be students who have a lack of confidence or have a fear of making mistakes. Techniques to encourage the, would be to use pair-work or changing the classroom dynamics. A guideline to have a creative speaking activity would be to decide on my aims and work out my instructions all before the lesson. During the lesson I should arouse the students and interests and monitor the activity without interrupting it. Then after the activity I could indicate how well the class communicated and take a note of common grammar mistakes. Then with the writing skills, I should always remember that the students' alphabet might be totally different fro, the English one, therefore their hand writing might be difficult to read and understand. But I should encourage them to improve on it. Spelling on the other hand could be helped along with doing extensive reading as the English language is not really phonetic. Also with the layout and punctuation, it can only be made better with more practise in many different styles. Then there is creative writing like poetry and stories, which should be encouraged! Then finally, playing games in the classroom, can always be fun and encouraging to the students. During the lesson it can practice language usages and arouse the students' attention. Traditional games can be modified for TEFL purposes. Games like hangman and twister.
