The unit looks into some of the most common problem situations that a teacher can come across in the classroom and suggests ways of dealing with them. Teachers can most commonly encounter problems with; first lesson, warmers, different levels, large classes, use of native language, reluctant studenst, and difficulties with listening texts. The unit explains that when facing a first lesson whether it is, a new group class or an existing group, as this is an important time to establish rapport with the students, it is best if the teacher resorts to activites that will establish rapport, find out about students, their needs or aspiration in English and also the English level of each class member.Example activities are suggested to achieve these first lesson goals. The lack of warmers before a lesson could dampen the atmosphere and mood of students to learn, thus unit suggests that warmers should be made fun but short and even linking them into the study phase could produce better results. For problems with a class that has students at varying levels the unit suggests that the best approach would be to use a combination of techniques like pairing stronger students with weaker ones, using different materials to suit levels, using same material but different task and sometimes don?t do anything and soon they will come to the same level. Large classes will present problems from trying to involve every pupil to controlling the class but the unit suggests teachers can use the large pool of dynamics to organize fun activities, appoint group leaders, use choral repetitions, use more pair or group work and rather use worksheets than going through the activity with the whole class. Use of native language problems the unit suggests that if the teachers gives clear explanation, use appropriate level activities, respond only to English and others this problem could be largely dealt with. The unit aslo explains that if some students are reluctant teachers could do more pairwork to involve them as they might lack confidence. Where student have difficulties with listening text, the unit advice teachers to work with the students to improve their listening skills rather than avoid using cassettes. It also suggest that having a selection of extra activities or material could help solve the problem of boredom with quick finishers. From this unit I have learnt the important skills to deal with commonly encountered problems in the class especially in establishing rapport in the first lesson and how to deal with varying levels in a class. The activities and ideas suggested by this unit has given me a really good idea on dealing with these problems.
