Teaching Special Groups 1. Beginners can be any age. a. Absolute beginners - no language knowledge or exposure b. False beginners - beginner level but had some exposure to the language (ie.tv/radio) c. Adult beginners - d. Young beginners e. Beginners without the Roman alphabet - don't know the alphabet Top 10 Teaching beginners: * keep it simple * be visual rather than verbal * get them talking * use questions & verbal repetition drills * use pair work * Be supportive and praise as often as possible * always respond to the individual needs * be patient * play lots of interactive games * Don't over correct 2. Individuals (one to one) Positive - only one level to teach at/ Negative - no dynamics * needs analysis * concentrate on their interests * cover all skills * Vary your activity and approach. varied as often as possible to try to keep it fresh. 3. Young Learners (YL's) 2 - 16 years of age * constantly praise them * constant repitition * slow simple speech * reference individuals * prepare lots of activities * keep it fun DOs: Always use English Speak slowly Use gesture & Mime Play games as often as possible (interactive communicative games that have learning capabilities) DON'Ts: Use their L1 (native language) Put them 'on the spot' Expect them to have what they need Be afraid of making fun of yourself 4. Business English (BE's) * 90% of be. language is general English *You are not teaching them about business Common Problems * tiredness - they may have been working all day * mixed ability - students from a single department * attendance - can be erratic * motivation - these will vary Typical process: Level test -> Needs Analysis -> group needs negotiation -> plan out the syllabus -> test and evaluate progress -> post course evaluation DO's: * use your ignorance of their job to your advantage *find out what their jobs involves * be professional (dress and dominare) * keep records DON'T's: * talk about people * expect them to bring everything they need * use their native language 5. Monolingual vs. Multilingual Monolingual a group of students that have the same native language and are being taught in that country. ie. Teaching English to Thai students in Thailand Multilingual a group of students that have a range of native languages and are being taught in an English speaking country. Advantages: Mono - * common difficulties * culturally similar * help each other in their native language Multi - * they have no common language * variety of experiences * more exposure to L2 (English) Disadvantages Mono - * will try even at higher levels to use their L1(native language) * less natural exposure to English Multi - * no common difficulties * different ethnic backgrounds
