There are five categories of special groups that require slightly different teaching skills. The first category is the beginner which can be sub-divided into the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner and the beginner without Roman alphabet. Teaching approach for the beginners should be simple and be more visual rather than verbal. Plenty of repetition and revision are usually required and learning should be made fun with various interactive activities. The second category of special group teaching is one-to-one lesson. The positive side of it is there is only one level, but on the other hand, loss of classroom dynamic and tiredness could post some threats towards teaching. Therefore teacher needs to do analysis and lesson plans that specifically concentrate on the student?s interests and is able to cover all the skills needed. Varying activities and approach should be made as often as possible too. In the third category of the young learners, their span of attention is much less than that of an adult, by patient repetition, positive encouragement and frequent praise, the child develops a sense of self-esteem and is less self-conscious about potential mistakes. Teachers may have some problems when dealing with young learners? discipline so it is vital to establish rules and stick to them. The forth category is business learners, they are usually highly motivated compared to young learners. The common problem for business people is tiredness as they may have been working all day. They usually have specific requirement such as formal writing, telephone English and vocabulary in sectors such as marketing, sales and product descriptions. Therefore need analysis is required beforehand to plan out proper syllabus. These students may be under pressure to learn quickly and will need plenty of encouragement, support, conversation practice and practical exercises. The fifth category is the monolingual and multilingual class. Students in monolingual class speak the same first language while multilingual students have a variety of first languages. In a monolingual class there may be more use of L1, which can create problems but can be a useful tool when necessary. There is also a shared culture, which a teacher can exploit. The learners may have similar learning strategies, and similar problems learning the target language. In a multilingual class there can be much more use of the target language, because it will be the only common language between the learners. Learners? behaviors and cultures can be very different, which may create problems but can be used as a focus of comparison and discussion. To summarize, patience, enthusiasm and good preparation can make working with different groups of student enjoyable and satisfying aspects of ESL teaching.
