The relationship between a teacher and the students is a justifiably complicated topic. There are many aspects that determine if, and how well, a student will be able to learn and retain the course material. Firstly, a teacher should have a strong knowledge of the topic that they are trying to convey to the students. Secondly, a teacher must be able to adapt to any situation in a classroom. If the students are unmotivated, then they should engage them more. If the students are nervous or having trouble answering a question, the teacher should be kind and patient. Not all students will act the same way during a class, so it is important for the teacher to engage all students equally, which can be difficult. Lastly, a teacher should be available to the students both during, and outside of, class. Individual attention can and should be given to students to help them overcome any weaknesses they might have. A teacher can have many roles in a classroom, and most of them fluctuate between leading the class and assessing the class as they work on their own. A good balance of each role should be used, depending on the situation. Speaking to and leading a class allows a teacher to convey information and ideas to students, while having the students work by themselves or in groups allows the teacher to assess if the students have a good understanding of what was taught. The teacher should always be available to answer questions, since they are the model of knowledge to the students. However, they should not necessarily spoon-feed answers to students and should instead prompt students to reach the answer themselves. The role and motivation of the students is also very important. Age, culture, and knowledge level all play a role in how well a student can and will learn. Adult learners are commonly fixed in the ways that they prefer being taught, while young learners are often more open-minded. Adult learners are often very motivated because they choose to be attend class. Young, pre-puberty learners are often motivated and very receptive to new concepts and ideas, due simply to their age. Teenagers, often the most difficult, tend to be unmotivated and self-conscious due to a fear of making mistakes. In addition to learning all of the topics discussed above, I have also learned about the Common European Framework established by the Council of Europe that states the 6 levels of language skill. These include breakthrough, waystage, threshold, vantage, effective operation proficiency, and mastery. Motivation can differ based on which skill level a learner is at. For example, a student that has a higher skill level may feel as though they've reached a sort of limit in terms of their abilities. While, a breakthrough student will be very motivated to learn the fundamentals of a language. In conclusion, the success of a student's learning experience depends on many aspects. Aspects related to the teacher and aspects related to the student.
