First lessons are a great time to establish rapport with the students and make sure that the students are establishing rapport with each other. To do this, one can begin the class with a fun and relaxed atmosphere and play some games to get everyone warmed up. It is important not to jump right into coursebook material but rather to find out about the students' interests, levels, and motivation for learning to best plan future lessons. Students should be encouraged to speak in English and not their native language. This is best achieved when the class is being taught at the appropriate level so that students are neither bored nor struggling to understand.
