I learned there is a certain flow to lesson plans when keeping the ESA framework in mind. The students need to know what the objectives are in the engage phase, then study the grammar forms and vocabulary as a class or independently, and finally, the students will activate what they know and have learned through active participation. Depending on the level of my students, I would need to brainstorm ideas for the activate phase that do not seem silly. For example, if I had an adult class, creating fantasy animals might not be as useful as learning how to ask appropriate questions to business colleagues. The classroom does not always have to be serious, but I want my student to think they are seriously learning.
