This unit talks about evaluating and testing the students' progress of level of English. Evaluation of students? level and progress can be done with tutorials (with the whole groups or with individual students), evaluation done by the students (with questionnaires or guided discussion), and with different tests. There are five different types of tests used in order to test the students? level and progress. Placements tests enables the teacher to place the student in the correct class according to hers/his language ability. It tests all 4 skills with multiple choice questions and spoken interview. It also offers progression (it starts with easy questions and progresses to hard questions). Progress tests are usually required by the school or students? parents, and are used to measure what language has been acquired/forgotten, what language items need more work, and are used in different time periods (once a month, after 6 months, at the end of the year?). Diagnostic tests are used to identify student?s current strengths and helps the teacher to identify what are the difficult areas the teacher needs to work on. Practice tests are used for revision, and should be similar format structure and form as an exam we are practicing for. Proficiency tests can be divided in three categories, depends on what we want to use the English for; general, business, and academic use. For general English there are five Cambridge exams (Key English Test, Preliminary English Test, First Certificate in English, Certificate in Advanced English, Certificate of Proficiency in English), they vary from elementary to very high level. Exams for business English are Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificates), which is used in preparation for a certain career, Cambridge BULATS (Business Language Teaching Service), which offers multilingual assessment, and TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). For academic English TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) are used. TOEFL is an American English exam that is usually used for non native speakers when applying for Universities. IELTS covers all 4 skills (writing, teaching, speaking, and listening), and can be used when applying for work or study. In this unit I learned about different ways of evaluating students and different test that can be used to determine progress of students. There are many ways for the teacher to determine if the students are learning as much as expected or are they in the right class according to their level. The most useful would be the use of test, even if some teacher do not like to use it. Enough feedback from the teacher through the course can help students to self evaluate and notice progress on their own, and observation in the classroom can tell the teacher if something needs to be improved. Tests are usually required by the school and even parents, and teachers usually can not avoid them.
