There are several categories of students, who learn English: 1.Beginners 2.Young learners 3.Business English 4.Individual students 5.Multi/ monolingual classes 1.Beginners This category has its own subcategories such as: Beginners - those who don?t have any previous practice in learning English The false beginners - those who had some lesson before and know some words or phrases. The adult beginners - adults (they are the most motivated students). The beginners without Roman alphabet - students whose native language written system is much more different from English (Chinese, Korean). We need to remember, that at the beginning stage teacher should spend more time to practice reading, writing and listening. Teacher should constantly give a home task, teach less, but spend more time on the practice and repetition. 2.Young learners Teacher should remember that young learners have a short attention span, they can quickly get bored and they have a small motivation. That?s why lesson should be made in a playful, but learning way; teacher shouldn?t use students? native language and try to give all instructions in English. The most important point here is that we don?t need to give a huge amount of material at once, but separate it in a logical order and each lesson give a small part of it. Otherwise, your students will feel frustrated. 3.Business English Teacher should remember, that 90% of the Business English language material is a usual (general) English itself. There thee variants of teaching business English: ?1-1 ?Teaching company department at your school ?Teaching in company When teaching such groups, teacher should remember, that students? age and level can really vary. That?s why it?s better to complete analyse of the group, to separate students in some sub groups and to plan the course. After the course, teacher should remember to complete a course test among students and let them describe their impressions. After such test, teacher can easily understand which point in his/ her course plan should be changed. 4.Individual students Such type of teaching is one of the most productive, because teacher and student are working one -to-one. Teacher can spend more time onto the student?s individual needs and appears as a partner, but the lesson sequence can easily become very predictive and boring. To prevent this issue, teacher should learn about the student?s interests, use variety of activities, find the ideal between what student wants and need to earn. 5.Multi/ monolingual classes Multilingual classes Such classes are widely popular among English native countries. The advantage of such class is that all students are talking in different languages, that?s why they need to use English to communicate, cultures? variety can make lesson more interesting and motivate students to communicate. In monolingual classes students will try to use the native language, when communicate with each other. Teacher should find some similarities in cultures and motivate students in such way.
