Unit 18 reviews modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. The unit starts off with an overview of how modal auxiliary verbs are used, particularly differentiating between the sometimes subtle differences between them. For example, level of politeness when they are used to make requests. The second concept it reviews is the passive voice. It is very tricky for students to keep the structures straight. The unit goes on to describe independent and dependent clauses to introduce relative clauses. The unit ends with a discussion on the three types of phrasal verbs, intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable. As always, there are teaching ideas for each of the concepts reviewed that are very helpful.
