This unit discussed the teaching of grammar and vocabulary. It began with a tree trunk metaphor that I found very accurate, describing grammar as the tree trunk and vocabulary and functions as the leaves, adding beauty and variety. We discussed how easy or difficult new vocabulary can be for a student, depending on similarity to the L1, similarity to known English words, spelling, and context. With each new vocabulary word, students need to learn meaning, use, grammar, interaction, spelling, and proper pronunciation. Next, we covered ESA techniques for teaching vocabulary. I particularly enjoy pictures as an engage technique, as you often hear several different perspectives, and can gauge the existing knowledge of your students. We then reviewed and saw more examples of straight arrow, boomerang, and patchwork ESA from Unit 3. The \"date\" activate activity from the function lesson is excellent! I find that these function lessons can often feel very structured and restrictive for the students. Having students invent excuses would be entertaining and informative for everyone involved.
