Unit 14 explores the use of course books and other materials to aid in teaching. Course books and materials used in classrooms can be very beneficial if used correctly, that is, to enhance learning for the students. Students most often find authentic and created materials more interesting than course books. Magazines, poems, songs and maps would be considered authentic, while flash cards, role play and gap fill activities would be considered created materials. When utilizing these resources teachers must make sure they are age appropriate and create balance for the students. Course books on the other hand, are usually expected by the students and therefore must be studied critically to stimulate interest and motivation in English learners. Teachers have the options of omitting lessons, replacing unsuitable material, supplementing other materials and using their own adaptation to make teaching more effective when using course books. Moreover, course books and the use of materials are both effective teaching tools that can benefit students in controlled or uncontrolled settings.
