I believe grammar plays a crucial part in second language learning. It provides a framework for the learners to construct their knowledge of the target language and enable them to continue build on this knowledge with solid fundamental structure along with the development of other components of the language, such as vocabulary,convention, etc.But it NOT right to introduce grammar as a standalone/isolated components of a language, especially to the beginners, it kills the fun of learning a new language. Therefore, it is important for teachers to have a mature/deep understanding of grammar in order to blend every important grammatical knowledge in daily learning along with the context and make it authentic and meaningful, and most importantly, fun!
