This unit covered how course materials can be divided into two groups: authentic materials and created materials. Anything a native speaker would encounter in real life could be authentic, such as a newspaper, or a movie, etc. Authentic materials are not designed for EFL learners, while created materials precisely are. They can be anything from a crossword, to flash cards, to word searches. Some advantages to using a course book are that it provides a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary, and skills work, it offers continuity and progression, and can offer many good ideas for an inexperienced teacher. Some disadvantages are that it won't always meet the needs of the class, it can make teachers lazy, or it could stifle their creativity if it is mandatory.
