In this unit, I studied how to use authentic materials, created materials, and course books. Additionally, I learned about several factors to take into consideration when using course books, including advantages, disadvantages, best uses, and use options. Furthermore, I learned what factors to consider when choosing a course book for a particular, if provided with that option. Authentic materials are more interesting and motivating, give students confidence when they understand the materials, and can be selected to appeal to a particular group of students, making them a valuable resource in the classroom. Created materials, on the other hand, can be graded to the level of the students and help the teacher to replace or supplement course book materials. As for course books, they offer continuity, good ideas for the inexperienced teacher and a syllabus graded to a suitable level for the students, among other advantages. However, course books do not always fit the specific needs and interests of all the students and can hinder teacher creativity, among other disadvantages. Thus, discretion is advised when using course books, understanding that they have their place in the classroom, but must be supplemented by the teacher's critical use of the books and ability to creatively supplement them to fit the specific needs and interests of students.
