This unit compared a good, well-taught English lesson to one that had many issues. This comparison demonstrated what is important for an efficient English lesson and what one should not do as a teacher. For example, one should try to be in the best mood possible, smiling a lot and thereby encouraging the students to participate and making them feel comfortable. One should memorize the students' names and use them when addressing them to make the class more personal. One should also try to explain assignments by using gestures and miming and if students still do not understand one should offer an example. Just repeating instructions will not make students understand better. One should also never say that something is wrong in a harsh manner, but ask the student if he or she is sure about his or her answer, letting him or her think about what might be wrong, then ask other students if they can provide the correct answer, and if all else fails, the teacher should offer the correct answer in a friendly manner. Also, the teacher should give students some personal space when completing assignments. He or she may walk around the classroom to monitor how far students are with their exercises etc., but should not sit down next to one student and wait, and should never read books or do something completely unrelated to the class during the study phase.
