Unit 19 covers the different types of learners. The first group it discussed is beginners. There are different types of beginners: absolute beginners, false beginners, adult beginners, young beginners, and beginners without knowledge of the Roman alphabet. The unit gives a list of tips for working with beginners. Some of these are be aware of the students? needs, control your language, and ask lots of questions. The unit also gives possible problems (with solutions) and motivation. The next group is teaching individual students. The advantages to this are no mixed levels, the students are often highly motivated, needs are clearly defined, and the teacher develops a close relationship with the student. The unit gives suggestions for working with individual students, ideas for one-on-one activities, and homework ideas. The unit also covers teaching children. The unit gives ideas for what the classroom should be like, dos and don?ts for the lesson, and ideas for classroom discipline/management. The biggest idea from this section is, ?the behavior and attitude/personality of the teacher is perhaps the single most important factor in a classroom and can thus have a major effect on discipline?. The unit ends with a discussion on teaching business English/English for specific purposes and teaching monolingual or multilingual classes.
