This lesson outlines the variety of class management strategies and their associated benefit and costs. In order to be an effective ESL teacher one must prepare, organize the class effectively, build rapport, maintain eye contact, maintain order, and balance the student/ teacher talk time. Organizing the structure of the class effectively is fairly easy and largely depends on what size or type of class one is teaching. This can include the physical arrangement of the space and whether one uses pairs or group work which comes with pros/cons. Building rapport requires the teacher to talk more and getting to know the students names. It is important to know all the students names and let everyone participate without anyone hogging the teacher?s attention. Eye contact is also important because it shows to the students that you know what you are talking about and it allows you to maintain discipline. Finally, balancing student and teacher talking time is a delicate balance because you the teacher are often the only live source of English that they hear; however, one must give the students opportunity to speak in class in order to practice and in order for you to monitor their progress. This also matters on whether one does individual work , pair work, or group work which each have their pros/cons for student and teacher talking time balance.
