This unit covered the form and usage of the four past tenses, as well as common mistakes and suggested exercises for each one. The four past tenses in English are past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Past simple is used for completed actions at a specific time in the past, and is often used with ?when? questions. Common mistakes have to do with the use of irregular past participles, the auxiliary verb ?did?, and confusion with present perfect. Past continuous is used for interrupted past actions, descriptions and gradual developments in the past. This tense usually requires some kind of time reference. Common mistakes include forgetting the auxiliary verb, using it with state verbs, and confusing it with other past tenses. Past perfect is used to talk about the past from a point in the past. It refers to points in time before another point in the past. Past perfect continuous is used for actions that had been occurring up to another point in the past. Common mistakes are forgetting one or both auxiliary verbs and confusing with other past tenses. I think it?s especially hard for students to understand the difference between this tense and past continuous. It would help to explain that past perfect continuous is used for actions up to a certain time, not just around or at that time.
