Writing is definitely the most neglected skill. Why? Time consuming, normally requires less use of the teacher, ideal for solo work and so forth. Practically it is good to leave as homework IF you make sure the homework is completed AND covered in the next class. Can't say I agree that accuracy and fluency are of equal importance. The purpose of language is to communicate not to be correct. Being correct is just the means to an end. Ice breaking activities are a great way to encourage interaction in a non threatening manner and promoting bonding within the class room. Creative/free speaking activity - good guidelines for before, during and after. One method I found that was useful was a trial run of the activity to demonstrate how it works. Hand writing - My students are Chinese and I found that their hand writing to be a very high standard and very rare were they challenged by writing English letters and words. Spelling is reasonable and layout/punctuation is bad. Creative writing - Most students find creative writing very hard because class room creativity is a neglected area. Cartoon speech bubbles and newspaper article photos are good ideas to kick start creative writing. Games - 20 questions is a good game if you add the rule that the question must have flawless English or the person asking will be penalized. Pictionary is also a great game.
