Unit 11 deals defines and explains the process of teaching receptive skills; reading and listening. The unit begins by defining the different objectives of reading and listening, that is, the depth in which we do either based on what we are trying to achieve: predicting before we begin reading or listening, scanning to disregard irrelevant information and focus on a target piece of information, skimming to get the general idea of what we are listening to/reading, and reading/listening carefully for in-depth understanding of content. The unit then goes on to explain strategies for teaching all of these skills to students within the ESA process. How important it is to keep students engaged by choosing content carefully that does not cater to one particular student, but attempts to interest all, and then goes on to provide specific examples of what an ESA lesson teaching receptive skills would look like. As with other units, I find the specific examples very useful. In teaching, I have the tendency to emphasize the Study and often have trouble coming up with good activities for students to Activate (or practice) the acquired skill. This is extremely important because, otherwise, the skill doesn't become ingrained in the student and although they are able to answer worksheets with the structure, they continue to have trouble using the structure in practice.
