In this lesson, the observations of both lessons provided stark differences in the presentation of this same lesson content. In the first video, the teacher started off with grammatical jargon, expecting the students to simply understand automatically, but providing no examples. He also had a largely unsuccessful demeanor during the lesson, ie. not encouraging the students, not clearly answering questions, and not using their names, causing him to seem disinterested and unprepared for the lesson. In contrast, in second version of the lesson, the change in the approach of the teacher made a huge difference in both the progress of the students and the atmosphere of the class. He used a good engage phase of simply having the students list animals and their actions. Then he was able to transition to the student phase where he introduced the concept of can / can't but not using grammatical terms that would be unknown to this level of student. Finally, after having the students interacting with each other on two worksheets, he moved on to the activate phase in which he provided an example of how to create an animal that can / can't do certain actions. The teacher could have even further improved the second lesson, by giving more clear examples of what he wanted from the assignment as well as moving around the room to evaluate progress and answer questions.
