This unit covered the why, how and when of evaluating students. There are three ways in which a students language level can be assessed; through tests, tutorials and evaluation of course itself by students. Tutorials can take place with the whole class and with individual students, the teacher will have to know how much time they have and balance this as it can be time consuming. the students can be given a chance to evaluate the course by means of a questionnaire or a guided discussion. the results of the survey can then be used in the future with the students in mind to plan for future lessons. then there are tests, these can be given at different stages depending on what the desired outcome is. placements tests are used before the start of the course to place students in the correct class according to their language ability. once students have been placed in different levels, diagnostic tests can be done, they are more extensive and will help the teacher to discover what the students know so she can better prepare for lessons and materials. progress tests are ongoing and are used to tests whether the students know the syllabuses they have already covered in class, this basically tests what they remember and what they do not. There is also practice tests that assist students with preparing for external examinations they might have like the Toefl and etc
