This unit has described the phonetic aspect of language, delving into details of pronunication of words and most importantly, how to teach and learn pronunciation. Learners are usually concerned with correct pronunciation of words and teachers need to help them sound as natural as possible as well as speak in a manner that will convey the expression they intend to bring out. Use of extra lettering, sound dropping and linking are some of the creative ways that spoken English can sound more natural. Phonology has to do with aspects such as intonation (pitch and volume, rise and fall of a statement); stress; and articulation. When saying something, the different application of these aspects will convey different meanings. e.g. REally Really? Really... The same word but with different intonations and stresses will carry different meanings and derive different responses from listeners. There are certain organs and parts of the mouth that go into producing phonetic sounds, e.g. the tongue, the teeth and the nasal cavity. The way these are used will determine the sound that is produced. In learning pronunciation, phonetic script can be used. These scripts are depictions of how each part of a word should typically sound. The dictionary will usually use these to show how a word should be said, therefore learners can also use these to know how to pronounce new words.
