Upon entering the second half of the ITTT TEFL Course we are taught two of the four basic skills used to communicate with language. It should be noted that of all the languages of the world, only about half of them have a written form. Obviously in this course, we are discussing English which is a complex, robust and ever-evolving language. The two receptive skills, reading and listening can be described as the ?acquiring? skills. Writing and speaking are the productive skills. Teaching the receptive skills presents its unique set of problems. Reading is considered easier because it is in fixed form - it can be read as many times as necessary. Listening on the other hand, is a social communication and in most cases is expected to be heard and understood on the first iteration. Nevertheless, all four skills are important and need to be integrated in the student. For receptive skills, pre-teaching new vocabulary is a basic teaching technique. It is important that the teacher carefully choose teaching texts that speak to the students? current skill level. Social cues are useful - choosing topics that capture the students interest and create interest in the class. The skills taught in the first 10 units of this course are all useful in helping the student achieve fluency and can still be incorporated as the students advance in their skill level.
