Unit 16 Overview The conditional is a very important part of English grammar. I consider it to be an essential item to be mastered by the non-native learners of the language, which is why I took quite a bit of time to study this unit. Conditionals are mainly used to guess about what could happen, what might have happened, and what we wish would happen. Most sentences are using the conditional containing the word if. There are a few main conditionals that are explained in this unit: 1. Zero Conditional - If + simple present This conditional we use when the result will always happen. Ex: If you touch a fire, you get burned. 2. First Conditional- If+ Present Simple, will + base verb It is used for a ?real? situation in the future that is possible, probable, or even certain, once the condition has been satisfied. Ex: If it rains, I will stay at home. 3. Second Conditional- If+ Past Perfect / could,/would, might + have+ Past Participle. With the third conditional we talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this condition. Ex: If I had seen Mary, I would had told her. 4. Mixed Conditional- If+Past Perfect, would+base form It shows a hypothetical past action resulting in a present outcome. Ex: If I had studied I would have my driving license.
