I think developing a rapport with students, and having students feel comfortable with each other, is crucial in creating a learning environment that is productive and fun. Warm-up activities, such as tossing a ball to get to know each other or pairing students for the purpose of gathering information about each other, need to be implemented often. Even once the students know you and each other, it is important that students are appropriately engaged at the beginning of every class. This unit was also useful in its depiction of the problems that can be faced by a teaching many different levels of students. I think all of the suggestions, ranging from pairing stronger and weaker students together to differentiating tasks, should be utilized and varied. I think it is important to teach lessons that you can present as broad subjects with differing levels of comprehension emphasized for different learners. I was well aware of the problems that can accompany large classes and reluctant learners. I think the best approach is to have a friendship with the students and be likeable. Unit 20 is right to impart to teachers the plethora of activities and approaches they can use to deal with all types of classes and students. Keeping students busy and interested is key. Also, using technology such as cassettes, CDs, and online exercises, can greatly improve student interest.
