Unit 12 is the second half to learning the remaining two of four language skills started in unit 11: the responsive skills speaking and writing. The unit begins by describing the differences in the 2 types of activities that can be used to teach these concepts, accuracy based activities and fluency based. With accuracy based activities, more control and guidance is provided by the instructor in order to produce correct language. Activities can include speaking and pronunciation drills or memorized dialogues. Whereas with fluency based activities, student leadership is encouraged to help students improve flow of their communication and inspire greater creativity. Examples of these types of activities can be model dialogues, debates, communication games, or information gaps. Both types of activities are imperative to effective speaking learning. Unit 12 then describes the importance of writing, as it is often overlooked by TEFL instructors. Writing is imperative to student appearing well educated and improving the accuracy of their language. Teaching writing skills can also prove difficult due to differences in alphabets, writing directions, and cultural norms. Lastly, the unit encourages the use of games as a means of effective learning. By presenting course material in a fun and engaging manner, using common/familiar games, students will learn and retain more.
