In working with my ESL students I find the biggest challenge is to get them to listen carefully enough to understand the question. I feel that the more carefully they listen, the easier it is for them to respond which in turn leads them to be able to comprehend what they read better. I have not been pre-teaching vocabulary but after having studied this unit see how it could help with their reading fluency. A do find it a challenge to find books or texts for beginners, something that might interest them when they are adolescents and from another country/culture so the suggestion of trying different topics is a useful one.
