There are two types of materials to use in class: authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials can be anything that native speakers hear or read. Examples include newspapers, magazines, programs, pamphlets, poems, films, vidoes, songs, and programs. Since these materials are real, students can find them more interesting, motivating, and can gain confidence from what they understand. They should be carefully selected to fit the students' level and show what they know, rather than real how much they don't. On the otherhand, created materials made by the teacher can be carefully adapted to the students' level, match their interests, and can supplement or replace materials from a textbook or course book. Teachers should plan classes using a mixed balance of supplemental materials and course book work. Course books provide a structure/syllabus for students and teachers, include grammar, vocabulary, and skills work, offer review, continuity and progression, and are often expected by the students. Furthermore, they can provide ideas of inexperienced teachers, are suitable for the students' levels, save class material preparation time, and provide some security. Make sure not to use the course book for the entirety of the lesson, however. The course book is not a solution to everything and can get monotonous if always used. Omit, replace, supplement, and adapt whenever deemed necessary. Remember that course books can dictate what is being taught, so be careful to deal with particular issues that may arise with your students. Choose an updated course book and one that is easy to use for the students. Don't rely too much on the textbook and become lazy when it comes to planning lessons. If you are able to choose your own course book, some important factors to consider include: the price, availability, design, methodology used, the balance of skills students will use, the level of difficulty, applicability of its syllabus, topics chosen, the teacher's Guide, and what kind of supplementary materials come with it.
