This unit covered the importance of teaching pronunciation to english learners, how it affects their communication, and how to use techniques to teach it confidently to students. Aspects of phonology such as intonation, stress, and linked speech were discussed as well as the importance of the International Phonetic Alphabet to introduce difficult sounds for students. I noticed that the English vowel system has more complexity than Romance languages, for instance, and the various ways of articulating vowels can pose a serious problem for some English learners. For example, linked speech could become a major obstacle for learners to communicate well if the subtleties of how words interact with each other in a sentence are never addressed and students develop poor pronunciation habits as a result. The connection between English phonology and the emotional messages it can carry was a very important point that I took from this unit. By using techniques to unpack the emotional content of English intonation and stress, I think a teacher has a strong way to engage and make learning English more interesting for students than examining English outside of its natural spoken environment.
