The unit is about pronunciation and phonology. Pronunciation is important in oral english. Knowing how to stress in a word or a word in a sentence is important to convey a meaning, for example, the intonation in a question if we want an answer to that question, one should rise the intonation at the end of the sentence. Phonology is important because a person can know how to write a word but this does not mean that the same person knows how to say, what are the sounds to pronounce the word. Because the same letter can have a different sound depending on the word and also some words can have the same sound but the spelling can be different. For example, the words 'pair' and 'pear' are different things, but these are pronounced the same. I think the phonetic chart is helpful for those situations because when students have difficulty in pronouncing something, it is easier, when in doubt, to look the chart to make sure they can pronounce the word correctly.
