Language tests fall into 5 categories: external, practice, placement, diagnostic, and progress. Whether or no a teacher approves of giving students occasional progress tests, more often than not, it is up to the school to decide the testing policies. Progress tests can be designed by the school, the course book, or the teacher him/herself. Placement and diagnostic tests basically have the same function: to gauge the students language level. The external tests are internationally recognized to certify individuals in their proficiency with the language, and are sometimes necessary to work in certain countries or companies. Students take practice tests to prepare for the external tests.
