This unit talked about the different types of materials a teacher can use in class. There are two types of materials; authentic and created. Authentic materials are materials that a native speaker would read or hear, such as a newspaper article or Song. Created materials are made by the teacher and are level oriented. These items can be crossword and words search puzzles, Gap fill activities, and role play cards. While authentic materials are a great way to learn the language and create confidence in students, they might be a bit too advanced for beginners. Course books are another great resource for teachers to use in class. They provide a built in syllabus and tested materials for student use. Course books also provide a balanced mix of vocabulary and grammar work, and are helpful for inexperienced teachers. When using a course book, it is important to not rely too heavily on the book and make sure to supplement, replace, omit, and adapt certain sections per the needs of the class.
