With over 7 billion people in the world, language is a pretty important tool for communication. Approximately 350 million of those are native english speakers, with an impressive 400 million calling it a second learned language. Thus shows the importance of english as a dominant global language. When did english begin its rise to global dominance? By the late nineteenth century, British imperialism was stretched on every continent except Antarctica. english was inserted into culture there, and used as the dominant speaking language. Even now, with some of the countries currently independent, english is still widely spoken as a first and dominant language. In many counties, the majority in Asia, english is mandated by most schools and businesses, especially those that do business with overseas english-speaking companies. Several countries, such as Singapore, Ghana, india and Nigeria, have adopted english as their official language to aid in media, education, politics, and government. Brittan and America are both political and economic giants, and because of that, english has been a huge role in the aforementioned areas. In regards to social media, music, news and other platforms, english is the most commonly used language. It is regarded as a “contact language”; when linguistic difficulties arise, english is the language that is reverted to in hopes of communication understanding. The internet, which is arguably the number one communication platform in the world, is decimated with english. Many foreign web sites offer english translation, but most sites are already coded and visualized in english. Many adults take english classes to become more employable with positions they apply for. Knowing the language and understanding it competently opens doors and creates opportunities for those seeking to get ahead. In the medical and scientific field, we are seeing more and more articles printed in english than any other language, and many books published in english than any other language. It is also the official language of the United Nations. Though it reaches over many platforms, english is not the most dominant language spoken world wide. That title goes to Mandarin, and many believe it is well on its way to becoming the next global language giant. This belief stems from china's rising role in foreign export dominance and political power. Unlike english, though, Mandarin is a language concentrated in a small part of the world, whereas english is spread out globally, as mentioned above. Once a language has risen to global status, there is a very likely chance it won't stay. Having a language achieve said status usually shows the political importance of the language, and if there is a shift in political power, a new language could very well slip in (see china's Mandarin). At the current moment, though, english still sits up top as the global language king, and because of that, foreign english classes are in such high demand. Native english from all over the world are signing up for tefl (Teaching english as a Foreign Language) classes to meet the demand of english speakers needed to support the global language dominance english currently holds. There are many opinions that current political heavy weights may be slipping, slowly but surely, though it has not slowed down the need to learn the world's most sought after language. english has been a global language giant for many, many years and shows no signs of slowing down.
