Learning a language requires reading and listening, speaking, writing, and production skills. We read by deduction, scanning, skimming, prediction, and detailed information seeking. However, students have problems with language when it comes to tasks, contained language, and topics. The solution to reading and listening problems are pre-teaching complex vocabulary and matching texts to student needs. Some texts will be made for them (non-authentic) and have words that they are studying. Other texts will not be made for them and will be authentic, but they will expose them to more new words. To have a receptive skills lesson, a teacher should do things like introducing motivating material, varying material, having a comprehensive task, pre-teaching complex vocabulary, and making sure that the activate phase connects with the text. In this unit, I learned that it's good to mix texts. Before, I thought that it might be better to stick to texts that are made for the class level students are in. However, this unit showed me that introducing appropriate outside texts can develop them as it makes them use other skills of reading like looking at surrounding text to understand the context.
