Modals are used Before verbs to add meaning to the main verb. They express obligation, possibility, advise, ability, and permission. They include should, would, could, can, can't, must, may, have to, etc. In the passive voice, the object of the verb becomes the subject in the sentence. For example: The ball was thrown by Mickey. However, in the active voice, the sentence becomes: Mickey threw the ball. There are three clauses: Independent, dependent, and relative. The relative clause modifies a noun, adding further information that can be essential (defining relative clause) or not essential (non-defining relative clause, which is easily identifiable by the commas).
