There are many different types of techniques and methodologies as to how a person acquires a second language (L2). Obviously, some people adhere to one way and some to another. There are pros and cons to all of them. That said, there are some common denominators that must exist for a person to acquire a second language well. Students need to have as much exposure to the language as possible. Environment is key. If the environment doesn't exist, than they must create one. Students also need a certain amount of input from a teacher. They should not be left alone to just 'figure it out'. Finally, though many people believe putting students into communicative tasks is the best way, it isn't enough by itself. Simply creating 'role play' situations for students and observing won't do. The students need some 'teaching'. Every lesson should engage the students, there should be a study component where there is a focus on the construction of the language and they should always end with 'actively' using the language freely and communicatively.
