Even though many linguists believe there is only a past tense and present tense, English is typically divided into twelve tenses fir ease of teaching. This is many more than in most other languages and can prove confusing to native speakers of those other languages. There are 4 present tenses- present simple, present perfect, present continuous and present perfect continuous. The present tense has many forms: simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. For ESL students this can present many difficulties. Teachers must use a variety of creative activities and approaches to convey the many forms of the present tense. Although there are some rules that can be followed, the many exceptions require that students need to memorize these exceptions. The content of this unit provides an overview of present tenses that are of crucial importance. The elaborated discussion on different forms and usages of each of these tenses has been very useful. The teaching tips that have been provided are of an immense help, as well.
