Nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, nouns, articles, and prepositions are the basic building blocks of a sentence. These are ?parts of speech.? Each part of speech contains its own set of categories and rules. Many rules are irregular and have to be memorized, such as how to turn any given noun into a plural?for example, the plural of kid is kids, while the plural of child is children. On the other hand, some rules are not set in stone and must be used based on what sounds most natural given the context, such as in what order one should write a list of adjectives preceding a noun. A thorough understanding of all these rules and categories will give a student more and more knowledge to create advanced phrases and sentences.
