Parts of speech can be quite confusing and challenging, not only for the student but also for the teacher. It is crucial that the teacher be educated and familiar with the general structure of a sentence. Meaning that each sentence must consist of minimally one subject and one verb, however, sentences most likely will contain more that the nominal requirements. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives are typically the most familiar parts of speech for most English speaking individuals. There are more in-depth forms that help in making up a proper sentence, such as articles, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, and prepositions/conjunctions. Ideally, I would assume that the basic parts of speech would be taught first and once more elementary knowledge is obtained than the additional forms would be added.
