I learned the multiple roles that a teacher plays within a classroom and how different situations/activities/goals require a specific role. At this point, I am most concerned over my role as an organizer - I would like to be more confident in my ability to organize and create a lesson plan. I also would like to know more about the manager and controller position since it would be necessary to carry out a lesson plan in the first place. I also learned about the characteristics of a successful learner such as willingness to listen to language, experiment, ask questions, and knowing their own learning process. This is helpful since I now know these are the characteristics I should Foster in a class. I also learned the differences between adult and young learners. Young learners are better at absorbing material and are open minded but tend to need motivation and discipline. And lower level learners tend to be more visual and seeing their progress is more obvious than more advanced learners.

The unit opened my eyes to the many different roles in which a teacher takes on, such that the teacher is there not only to teach, but to also exert an influence upon the students and motivate them in their journey. It also emphasized on the balance one must maintain while teaching such that we do not spoon-feed a student, or leave them confused and hanging. For example, when a teacher has to strike a balance between correcting a student, and doing it so often that it affects their confidence level in the language. The unit was also helpful in explaining the different factors that affect a student's learning, from their cultural background to their age and even their language experiences. It was interesting to have things I've known but never really thought about highlighted to me, like the fact that adults tend to be more motivated because they chose to learn and were not forced to like younger learners. Overall, the unit has given me a better understanding of teaching as a whole, and the numerous roles a teacher takes on. Definitely a good start!

This unit provided a cursory overview of the basic building blocks of the English language - the different parts of speech. Every word in a given sentence plays an identifiable role. People rarely give much thought to these things in their native language because they simply "know"" how to use the language. Students studying a second language however will approach the language in a more systematic manner. It is therefore necessary that EFL/ESL teachers are familiar with - and able to articulate - all of the building blocks of speech."

In order to clearly understand any language, one most learn the basic parts of speech to be successful. This unit illustrated the importance of understanding nouns, adjectives, verbs, articles, adverbs, and many more grammatical terms. Even though it is easy for native speakers to speak, it was a challenge to specifically state why we use our parts of speech the way we do. I have learned that the English language, as a whole, is very difficult to master. The reason being that we have so many exceptions to many "rules.""
