Unit 13 dealt with teaching techniques for pronunciation and phonology. The text began with explanations of the differences between the two topics. It then moved on to a discussion of intonation and stress, and how they differ. Examples were provided to explain how intonation can alter the meaning of a sentence. Likewise, the stress placed on a single word can be used to emphasize a thought or meaning within a sentence. The remainder of the Unit dealt with the connection between phonemics and how sounds are created by the human body. As I have never been taught the phonemic chart, or what was, at one time, termed 'phonics', I found the related text very instructive. I have struggled to teach pronunciation to my Asian students, so the techniques presented in this unit should be helpful.
