This unit has been the outlier of the course so far. It is quite a different type of knowledge to study. For native English speakers, it is not common to read or know much in terms of the how we pronounce the words we do. For us, we speak and practice and go by ear to if we are saying words or sentences correctly. At first, looking at the phonetic symbols, it is intimidating because it looks like a foreign language. It is like a foreign language inside our own naturally used language. Very different to explore. This unit has been useful though in pointing out the unthought-of ways in which we use our verbal parts of our bodies. Also, it helps to show us methods how to pronounce sounds we use which is also a good thing to know to pass on to students who may wish to be more aware of these concepts.
