In general course books are helpful for teachers as well as for students. They represent organised material and a good base for learning process. The advantages of using course books are that the students expect some certain material, they are attractive, tested graded for level, have a good grammar and vocabulary balance. They also give good ideas for inexperienced teacher and allow to practice language items learnt before. But there are also some disadvantages, sometimes the book can be predictable and not interesting, also some topics are general and can't be discussed with all nationalities. Teachers can be focused on books and become lazy, stop analysing students' real needs. Best of all, if we combine our materials, course book, some authentic material, plan the time and vary the class activities.
