Evaluations and tests are important and serve different purposes. Tests should not be conducted for tests' sake. Teaching is more effective only when a teacher knows the learner's level, so that appropriate teaching materials and tasks can be used for the learner. As teachers, we don't want the teaching materials and activities too difficult to discourage students or too easy to get students loose motivation. Therefore, knowing our students levels are important. Diagnostic tests are also important if we want to know learners' problems so that we can offer the right help.
