This unit gives an overview of how we should teach new language in the three main blocks of a language : vocabulary, grammar and functions (this latter being for instance the way to formulate an invitation, refusal, agreement or a suggestion?). ESA methods are used to teach these 3 areas but it is highlighted that straight arrow ESA should be privileged for vocabulary whereas the boomerang and patchwork ESA approach should be used as regards grammar and functions. Examples of techniques and activities are being given for each area and some criteria such as the selection of vocabulary, what the students need to know when learning new vocabulary and grammar.
