This short unit concerned teaching receptive skills. It discussed the nature of receptive skills, what different skills are involved in reading and writing, what one should keep in mind when selecting texts for the classroom and when practicing receptive skills during class, and how one might practice reading and listening in the classroom through different exercises and activities. This unit provided a sample lesson as well as materials for two practice lesson plans. Although this was a short unit and I was familiar with some of the material because of my own experience learning French in the classroom, it was helpful to consider how one should approach teaching and practicing these skills, where the focus is less upon specific grammar points or vocabulary. For instance, I hadn't considered the different skills involved in reading/listening and the breakdown early on in the unit was interesting, as it precisely laid out some of the skills that would need to be developed in class and which students may struggle with. On another note, while it may seem obvious that creating interest is necessary in choosing and introducing readings, I appreciated the space dedicated to this subject in this unit. I was compelled to consider how I would construct the engage phase in these lessons and how I would shape the lesson around the reading in order to build interest in the students and to develop the relevance of the subject matter. The two practice lesson plans were particularly helpful in this.
