Unit 15 covers the different ways teachers can evaluate students' levels and progress. It also briefly covers some common external exams that teachers may need to prepare their students for. While ongoing feedback is necessary in order to provide students with the information needed to evaluate their own level and progress, sometimes more formal feedback is needed. This may generally be required from the school or institution that you are working in as well. A student's language level may be assessed through tutorials, evaluation by students, and through tests. There are a few different types of tests. Placement tests are designed to help teachers place new students into the correct class by gauging their language ability. Progress tests are used to periodically check what language has been acquired and what language has been forgotten by students. These help teachers and students find out what language items need to be practiced more. Diagnostic tests are given at the start of a course to check what students already know, and to help teachers prepare lessons and materials that will enable students to work on the areas of difficulty identified by a diagnostic test. Practice tests follow the format and structure of the external examination that the students are being prepared for. Some common external examinations include TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC. Cambridge examinations include KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE. The BEC and BULATS are two examples of common examinations for Business English.
