The basic principles of this unit are: -Nouns name people, animals, places etc. Types of nouns-Common -Proper -Compound -Abstract -Collective -Adjectives are used to describe nouns There are comparative and superlative adjectives. -Articles Indefinite article (a/an) Definite article (the) -Verbs refer to actions and states. Transitive verb- a verb that can be directly followed by an object. Intransitive verb- a verb that cannot be directly followed by an object. There are four principal forms of verbs : Base form : Past simple : Past participle : Present Participle Auxiliary verbs help to form a tense. -Adverbs to a degree describe the verb. Main types - Manner (well) - Place (above) - Time (now) - Degree (very) - Frequency (sometimes) -Gerunds are the -ing forms of verbs that are used as nouns. -Pronouns are words that are used in place of more precise nouns Types - Personal (I/me) - Possessive (mine/yours) - Reflexive (myself/yourself) - Relative (who/that) -Prepositions show the relationship between a noun and another word in the sentence. Main types - Time/date - Movement - Place/position Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence (and, but, or) This study unit has helped me recap all the different parts of speech.
